1977 CB750K won't start. One point not opening

77750K
I have a 1977 CB750K that won't start. I have replaced the points, condensers, regulator/rectifier, solenoid and battery. It has spark but the point for 2/3 won't open, just stays closed. I've tried adjusting it per the manual, but it just won't open even when rotating the crankshaft by hand. Any suggestions on setting the points? Could it be a defective point?

Could be, but it probably just needs a little coaxing. You do know that there are some little tabs/bumps that you stick a screwdriver in, and turn to move the points.
Do you have a manual? You can download the factory manual for free from the home page here.

I didn't know about the tabs/bumps, must have missed that in the manual. I'll look that up tonight and give it a try. Thanks.

You know the 2-3 set of points has it"s own sub plate and it's own separate screws so once you set 1-2 you then will not move the big base plate lock the big plate down and leave it alone. then loosen the two screws for 2-3 and adj.them on the high point on the points cam.

That's for setting the timing. Not for setting the point gap.

I tried adjusting the set screws last night and no matter what combination I tried, the 2-3 point still won't open. The little pad at the base of the point just isn't making contact with the crankshaft. Wondering if it's a defective part.

Could be, but adjusting screws does not set points.

I will try to put up a picture tonight showing where to pry with the screwdriver. Are you using a feeler gauge to set them? They need to be set at .015.

If you download the factory service manual from the home page here, and go to page# 89 Fig. 7-14 you will see a picture of the contact breaker assembly. If you look to the set of points on the right, and look just to the right edge of them, you will see two little bumps on the plate right by the screw, and a little slot on the point assembly. This is where you use a standard/flat blade screwdriver to move the points to set them. You want a .015 feeler gauge to just have a little drag on it. Then after setting the points, drag a businesses card through them a few times to make sure that there is not any oil/grease on the contacts.

The download for the service manual doesn't work. I have a Clymer Manual and I followed the directions it has about setting and adjusting points. I moved the screw on the plate and nothing happened. I can set the 1-4 point without any issues, but the 2-3 simply won't open no matter what I do.

Lucky 1
That set of points could have a phenolic block that is worn down or broken.

Compare it to the other set.

OR... The points set is so far off because it is too far away from the crankshaft points cam.

Get new points and new condensers.

Show us a photo of each set of points.

There are two links for the 69-78 manual. If the first one does not work, I know the second one will. Again I will reiterate "turning/adjusting screws will NOT adjust the points!"

Success! The bike starts right up and idles, but when I twist the throttle with the choke off, it dies. Is this a timing issue?
