Re: 1980 Honda CB750K Cafe Build

Thank you all so much for the help! Super grateful over here!! I've gotten a lot more knowledge just reading through everyone's posts! I hooked up to the starter with the help of a screwdriver like TOOLS suggested and the starter seems to be in working condition. And the starter button has some connection, but I'm not sure how far it goes. I can hear the click in the relay but it won't turn the starter over. So I'm leaning toward the connection between the relay and the starter being bad.

Ordering parts from Japan wasn't a good idea... The aluminum tank measurements are wayyyyyy off. It looks sick though. Oh well.. I have to return it, and I might just sandblast the original and beat it with a hammer some.. If I ruin it I won't be too disapointed.

P.s I'll get some pictures of the rock crawlers soon

Here are a few pictures of the crawlers.

And the newest project is a '76 Jeep CJ7 (remember that this is NEW and we haven't done much to it aside from my Fiancé putting different axles under it and everything is garage fabricated at home.

I just went through this with my 81. Replaced the battery and boom, fired right up. Turns out the original was very low on acid. Cleaned all the connection in the circuit and checked to make sure that it was charging with a multimeter once I got it running. if your battery is reading under 12.6v just sitting there no load it might be to weak to turn hold the starter solenoid open and it closes again not allowing the starter to turn. just my .02 and I'm new here too so YMMV.

I don't know what's going on. I just got a new battery. And it is reading right at 12.6v. What you're saying definitely would made sense, but since that is not the case i am at a bit of a stand still.
Thanks for your help!

Did you fully charge the battery when you got it? if not you can mess up the battery, bike batteries are not as forgiving as car batteries.

Healthy starter.

Just because the relay/solenoid is clicking it doesn't mean it's transferring power. Since the starter motor spun over when you manually jumped out the relay, that tells you that your battery cable is ok (highly unlikely to actually have a bad cable anyway). The only other connection is the relay itself. Hearing it click tells you that your starter button on the handlebar is working (yay for small victories!), so all you have left is the relay. You may be able to take it apart and clean it, but a new one is only about $12-15. The click is the low amp portion of the relay doing it's job, the lack of starting is a clue that the high amp portion of the relay is corroded/bad.

Thanks for the pics of toys. The Yota looks like it's seen some good use.  Looking forward to finished pic of the Jeep, too.

TLDR: You need a starter solenoid.

I think you pinpointed it as close as anyone possibly could.

Shinyribs THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! That information is greatly appreciated! I am glad you like the crawlers! The toyota has been through some grinders hah. I will definitely keep updates of the jeep on here if you all are interested.

That Yoda is cool. I've always been a fan of Toyota trucks, more so after Top Gear tried to destroy one.

You're welcome. I hope I'm telling you right, but with the symptoms you found I'm very confident it's just a solenoid.

And yeah, I'm definitely up for some truck updates!
I've never really gotten in to rocks due to my area, but I grew up playing in the mud. Motorcycles are fun, but the violentness ( that a word?) of a truck being hammered offroad is fun like no other. I wish I had some pics of our old toys, but that was before the interwebs , so we didn't worry about stuff like that.

Those Yota's are hard to kill. And I just noticed the truss on the jeeps front axle. Man, this thread is stirring some memories. I can smell the swamp rot from here. :(

Good luck on your bike. :)

Hahaa the jeep is definitely going to end up as a jeepota (jeep\toyota hybrid). I got my helmet today so I've been sitting on the bike frame willing this thing to start on its own freewill haha

Hahaa exactly like that Tools!
Guess what!!! She runs! Apparently it was the battery and the positive cable that were bad after all! Hooked it up to a car battery and it started right up! You would think that when you buy a new battery and follow the instructions to a t I would be able to eliminate that as a potential cause for the bike not running. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6DPeJo1_dSWS0hUMW01MW9DNXM/edit
I hope this link works.

Problem solved... no I feel ya though. I'm not vertically enhanced either. I'm hoping that by lowering the front a bit on the forks for my clip ons and getting a much thinner seat will make it a little more comfy.

You guys are awesome! So I decided to try my hand at beating in my gas tank, welding, and bondo-ing it. I think it is turning out pretty good. I hate bondo though ugggh. I still need to sand and add a few more light coats of bondo. But here are some progress pictures. Btw I used a bowling pin to hammer in the dents because it's rounded and wooden... Worked pretty good!

Please be brutally honest

Rich's ex wife once did the same thing to his gas tank. Was not as pretty as yours.
