I bought a 82 cb750k, 10,000 original miles, cherry cond, runs great except on idle it has a terrible noise, when i pull in the clutch lever its as quiet as a church mouse, also noise goes away if i bring up the rpm,s.. someone mentioned the clutch basket, any idea,s out there, much appreciated,,thanks, mike

The noise usually is caused by the clutch rocking back and forth. This is caused by uneven firing pulses. Syncronizing the carbs will usually take care of this.

thank you, i will have it done...mike

thanks!! will do, just got done installing MAC 4 into 1 canister exhaust system, sounds great,
have not ridden yet cause im waitin for new rear sprocket to arrive at dealer, 3 teeth smaller than stock,,a little less rpm,s will save gas and motor.

I have the exact same bike, '82 750k with the same noise. My carbs were recently rebuilt so I'm thinking that's not the issue. It also runs very smoothly. Does anybody have any ideas about what else might cause the issue, something loose in the clutch?

Hi, ive read alot of posts and a lot of research about this clutch noise problem, some say dont worry they all do it just a bad design, some say sync the carbs will take care of it, my bike runs very smooth and have no other issues just that damn raspy noise at idle, as soon as i pull in the clutch lever it goes away,
one of these days im gettin a new clutch basket and all the works, a lot of people say its the clutch basket tolerances get worn after about 7000 miles, those baskets new are around 300.00$..
disks are another 100.00, springs 20-30,,someday, for now ill live with it, try turnin up your idle to 1200 rpm, helps a little,,,mikey440

I'm wondering if this is normal clutch/transmission noise. If I'm in neutral and let the clutch out, there's some extra stuff moving around in there. Pulling in the clutch, the noise goes away. I seem to remember reading on other forums this is normal.

Remember, these are air cooled motors that expand from heat. So extra tolerances were built in. Noise is expected to some extent no matter what you do. Now if it sounds like a rock tumbler, THEN there might be something going on.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Fair enough. My friend believes that all of these bikes more or less make the same noise too.

yeah, dont beat your self up too much trying to get rid of all the noise. Some noise is normal.
