So I have a 76 cb750k. I had a friends dad install new tires for me last week. This guy knows a ton about bikes. Anyway, I am putting the wheels back on the bike today and front goes fine. However, when I get to the rear I am dismayed to find I may be missing a part. Starting from the right side of the bike, I slid the axle through the trailing arm and into the brake assembly. When it comes out the other side (sprocket side), the axle slides through an axle collar. This collar looks just like a thread spool. When I put the axle nut on and go to line the wheel up and adjust chain tension, I find there is a one inch gap between the brake hub and the right trailing arm. My wheel has 11/16" side-to-side movement. My first thought is I lost the spacer somewhere. So I call the Honda dealer and they say there is no collar or spacer on the right side. Only on the left. The guy confirms by searching the parts catalog photos. So where did this one inch gap come from? If I try to tighten the axle nut the tire just moves to the right and butts up agianst the trailing arm. Has anyone ever had these wheels off that can shed some insight on the topic? I have spent the whole winter restoring this bike and the season is just about to start. Needless to say I am very disappointed.

Well after a while of looking on the internet and scouring ebay for new parts I think I found what I was looking for. Matter of fact, I just googled 1976 cb750 and one of the first images that comes up is a parts diagram for the rear axle. None of the axle assemblies I saw for sale, nor did the parts diagram have the spacer in question. I am just doing something wrong. Is there supposed to be a gap? Does the hub stabilizer bar prevent the rear wheel from walking left to right?

OK, in my shop manual(for the 78 but should be the same)when looking from the back of the bike forward.
The bolt is inserted on the left side. There are no spacers on the left, the bolt goes through the drive plate and through the hub, when it comes out, it should go through a spacer about 1 - 1.5 inches wide.
This is the pic from my honda manual. It is in docx but most anything should be able to open it. rear.docx

#11 (axle) is inserted from the left (sitting on the bike) and goes thru a collar (#13). Notice on the right side (brake side) there is no collar. So basically when all is said and done I have a gap between the brake hub and the trailing arm. Granted my bike has a drum brake so maybe it is different from this diagram. I just don't see that skinny little stabilizer bar keeping the rear wheel from sliding sideways. --- On Fri, 3/26/10, Re-run [via Honda CB750'S] <[hidden email]> wrote:

I just went out and looked again. I happened to have some pics I took last year that kindad show that axle. Here is the issue I am having now. I am including pics just taken. Perhaps u could compare them to your bike. I am thinking the collar may be on the wrong side of the axle. If this is the case, the space will go away and the wheel will be aligned. However, the left side of the hub will butt up against the trailing arm. I am so confused. Check these pics out and see if you can disipher the cbdavinci code. By the way, in one of the pics I used a flat-head screwdriver to point to the collar in question for you. Thanks re-run.

Hmm it should have given you the option to download or open the file. I saved it in word 2007 but if you have all patches for 2003 it should still open.
Anyways, on your first pic, there is a spacer missing. You need that spacer in there.
Try this. rear.pdf

Isn't your axel in backwards? The nut should be on the right side of the bike with the cotter pin when looking from the back of the bike and the spacer seems to be missing on the right side (looking from the back) as well. I just took off my rear wheel, photo'd it, I'm on a different computer, it's matching up exactly as the pic re-run posted.
Here is one I just ran out and took, the angle of this is if you are looking at the bike from the back, what is missing is the wheel/brake set-up, that's it.

I thought the axle was in backwards but this is how the bike was when I bought it. I did find a custom shop locally that turns these bikes into bobbers and took everything to them. Come to find out the part I was missing is not a part of the axle assembly, which is also missing in your photo fpcb. The spacer actually sits inside the left hub. It must've stuck in when we removed the wheel and fallen out somewhere. Anyway, the guys at the shop happened to have one that I purchased real cheap and all is well. I still don't understand why the axle is in backwards. I have pics I took last year before taking it apart and that is how it was. I can't see how this would really make a difference but what I don't know fills a big book. Got the bike together and after one brake adjustment, this season's a go. Thanks everyone!

Nice catch, that spacer is still in my wheel, I'll make sure to keep an eye on it :) , I'm glad they had one for you and that you're all set!
