74 750 clutch/shifting problems.

Aaron01
My 74 750 is killing me. First, can anyone tell me what the shift pattern is? (My first bike). It seems like from neutral, I can push the lever DOWN 3 distinct times. From neutral, pulling it up does nothing. Also I crank it, (my idle is too high, but thats another post) and I clutch, tap down into first and no matter how I go from clutch to throttle, it goes about 6 feet and "clink", it dies. Is this the wrong shifting pattern or do I just really suck at driving a motorcycle?

Welcome to the forum. The shift pattern is 1 down, 4 up with neutral between 1st, and 2nd. However it designed  to go into neutral from 2nd, and not from 1st. This way you do not hit neutral while up shifting.
The bad news is, it sounds like you might have a transmission problem. I would find some one who has riding experience, and ask them to take it, for a ride. Any one with experience would be able to tell if there is a problem. After that, let us know, and we'll work it out.

how many miles do you have? Do you know what oil is in it?
If it is high miles, a clutch rebuild(replacing disks)may be in order.
If you do not know what oil, change it. You can use most any 10-40 you want as long as the bottle does not say energy conserving on it. I would suggest using a quality oil such as rotella t though. It is a 15-40 weight diesel oil.

Also, finding neutral in these bikes is not that easy. With good oil, it is better but it is not uncommon the when sitting still, especially with the engine off, that the gears do not shift well. You have to rock the bike forward and back while shifting to get them to go sometimes.

If you need someone to feel the gears for you, find someone who rides old bikes. newer bikes do not have these quirks.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Thanks guys, I'm using a 10- w40 oil and bike had 37, 532 miles so......yeah. I'm definitely going to replace El clutch. Where would be the best place to buy a rebuild kit?
