OOh, CS5.5 suite…nice. I just have PS CS5 and LR3. Another thing I used to do when re-using parts was to get cheap blocks of foam from the hobby or craft store. You can push holes into them to hold parts like pushrods, lifters, bolts and nuts in essentially the same position they're in when they're in the engine. Makes reassembly easier, so long as no one knocks your parts filled foam blocks off the shelf. :)

Before you take the transmission a part, look at the shifter mechanism. There is a thin plate on the shifter that gets bent. Replace first. It is a project to get in to the transmission and reassemble.

When you say you have "missing spots in your shift pattern" what does that mean???

Do you mean it will not go into all the gears????

As far as the engine rebuild.
Try to get the engine on a table up off of the floor.
Provide a table to put the parts on.
Go get a box of clear plastic bags to put parts in and a magic marker to label the parts.
Just take one step at a time and follow the instructions in the manual.
If there is something you do not under stand ASK. First or it can $$$$you.
