76 CB750 race bike project

Tear down
Work has slowed down for a few weeks so, I thought I would tear into a project motorcycle. I really don't have any experience, but I have some time and the project bike was priced right. Really the bike came apart easliy, all except for the fork tubes which look like hell. I can see I'm going to need new tubes these look like they have been in the ground rusting for years. They sure were rusted under the head light mounting brackets.

Vision

When I was thinking about purchasing this bike in a box, I saw this old Tamiya model and though this bike has potential. So here I am.
1) Locate front end with dual disks, I've seen several mods off a GL1000 front end. Is this the best direction?
2) Open up the motor and see if its all there.
Thoughts?

Magic or need impact wrench
Axle nut
Is there a trick to removing this nut or is a impact wrench required. Man is it stuck.

I have had to smack the wrench with a hammer on occasion to get that nut off, so an impact might be in order. As, for forks like the ones on the model, you already have them. The right fork leg already has the mounts on it, for the break caliper. If, you want to see how it is done, look at "My Buddies POW/MIA bike" in the build section.

Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to what you come up with here. Are you gonna find a fairing for your bike, too?

On the axle-Yes, a sturdy phillips one side and an impact on the other. It'll pop off pretty easy. Always have for me.

If you decide to keep your sliders( bottom half of forks) I have a pair of tubes I can hook you up with. Dual disc conversions are pretty simple on these bikes using all stock parts,so your half way there already!

Defiantly want to do the fairing, I have seen a couple of dealers on line. Like http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/hondaz/CB750SOHC1969-77.htm
As far as the front tire I’ll try the hammer smack, but an impact gun would not be a bad investment, you can always use more power. I’ll have to track down the MIA/POW bike under the build forums for more information on the dual disks.
Thanks for the advice, I’m really excited about the journey.

Do you have an Ampro Tools store in your area? They have a 'back room' where are the defect tools are. They are more than happy to let you back there. I have seen brand new 1/2'' air impact guns with torn grips selling for $15 -20 in there.

You can use a hand impact driver with a socket on it. You will HAVE to have one anyway.

I'm reading the POW/MIA article now, and looking at the fork tube modifications I see both tubes are set up in relatively the same configuration. I would assume you need to have the same mounting bracket for the break calipers. Any good sources?
tubes
Also, looking at the tubes I have a lot of sanding and polishing to get these back to shape.
Tube tops
Today I'm going to set up a work bench and pick up an impact wrench, so I can spend some quality time.

Those fork tubes are definitely shot. I have an early style caliper, and bracket I would let go, for $75.00 shipped.
Oooops. I think, you have the high dollar later model caliper.

After sandingn
Yea, even after sanding, the nicks and gouges looked bad. Not sure, which way I will proceed, but I will keep my eyes open on eBay and keep searching the forums for ideas.
On the tool front picked up the impact wrench, so I hopefully I can open up the forks and break down the wheels. Also, found some saw horse to set up a workbench. Slow progress, but progress.

Morider, I have a couple set of forks that would work on your bike. If you decide to stay stock I can hook you up :) cheap
