76' Charging issue

Thornon
This post was updated on .
Hey guys, new to the forum been reading some topics off an on for a few weeks.

Any way, ive got a ole 76' cb750f thats got a "slight" charging issue, previous owner told me it was the stator, he purchased one, just never put it on. so ive got it. well, i pulled the housing off to replace it today, and MUCH to my surprise, its got a 1/3 cup of oil in the case. i drained it out, but i obviously need to replace a seal or something of the sort. has anyone else had this issue? i dont really have the space, knowledge or the time, to tear the engine all the way down for a seal (this is my fear at this point). also could the oil have been causing the "slight" issue with not charging?

Thanks much,
Charles T.

PS. on a side note, i pulled the front caliper all the way apart as it was locked up im going to use the same piston (it only has mild surface rust, all in all, not bad condition) but is there anything else i should know before i put it back together? any information is much appreciated.

PPS. has anyone had experience with http://www.vintagecb750.com/ ? they seem to have decent prices on stuff, and no one local to me has much for "stock" of anything for a 76' haha

no "good" pictures but i like it

Only 1/3 cup of oil? I usually have at least 1/2 cup of oil when I pull that cover. I think you better look to make sure that you don't have a blockage somewhere.
On the caliper, use some white grease to make it go back together easier, and to protect it from the elements.
I have always had good dealings with vintagecb750.com myself. I know some people have had problems with returns though. However their shipping seems to take a little while longer then some other places. I always go to cycle-x first for parts myself, then vintage, or z1 enterprises.

Welcome in Thornon! Like Tools said, oil in that cover is normal,no problems there. Where is the rust on your caliper piston? As long as the rust is outside of the seal it won't affect anything. Any rust inside the seal can cause all sorts of issues.

I've bought alot of stuff from Vintage. Always pleased with the products quality. I had a hiccup with some spokes one time, but it was an isolated incident. They're the first place I go to if I can't find it local.

Nice looking bike ya got there. You wanna sell it?

Just so we are clear, the oil doesnt effect the charging system at all? Im not the sharpest crayon in the box, but that seems quite abnormal. Guess I just need to put it back togeather. And act like I never saw a thing.

Might toy with selling it once I find anouther  but for now, im gonna play with it, and this is my first bike btw, I do hear quite a few nice things about them.

I will take some pictures of the piston and caliper tomorrow, see what you all think. Haha.

Correct. The starter gear is in that cavity and needs the oil. Totally normal, nothing to worry about. If you ever try and read ohms through a puddle of oil you'll see that it reads the same as an open circuit-no conductivity whatsoever. Also, everything going on in there concerning the charging system is working off of a magnetic field. There's no real ''juice'' going on in there to begin with. You're all good bud.

The only things left to check now is your rectifier, your voltage regulator and all of the connections concerning the charging system. Here's a link to checking out the voltage regulator. The points inside it may just need to be cleaned. Just like your connections may just need cleaning. Good luck!
