77K clutch rattle

katman
Hey Guys,
You know I just finished my 77K rebuild and restore. I did new rings, cam chain tensioners, head etc.
Bike has 23,000 miles on it. Cam and primary chain looked great. My problem is when i first crank up
when it's cold I get a rattling noise. It decreses quite a bit when I pull in the clutch lever or when rpm's increase. I didn't see in evidence of the primary hitting anything while it was apart. Once the bike is warmed up you donot hear it anymore. Carbs are synced. It's actuallly done this since I have had it. Shifts and runs great. Is this the clutch rattle I have heard about and is there a cure.

It probably is.  Any chance you can get a quick video clip of it, and post it here?
The clutches for these bikes can generate some chatter.  When you pull in the clutch lever, and it gets quieter, that localizes it to the basket.  It will generally be worse at idle vs. when on the power.

There are some mods out there that will quiet things down some.  You may also have a slightly warped clutch basket or opened-up slots for the clutch disks.

I'll try and get a video. Once the engine is at operating temp. it goes away.
