79 CB750 battery dies after trying to start only a few times (have new battery)

ShawnMac
When I try starting the bike the batter gets drained within a few times of trying to start it.  When I leave the battery plugged in and don't try to start the bike it's fine, but as soon as I try starting it it dies faster every time there after.  It's a brand new battery.  I'm thinking it's the ignition coils, but i don't know for sure.  I know it has something to do with starting the bike, but I don't know what part.

Anyone know what It would be?

I just purchased the bike and have been working on it quite a bit, keeping much of it original, but I haven't even heard her start and I'm so anxious!
Thanks for any info!

Have you ridden it, or are you just starting it up?  These bikes are famous for bad alternators.  Also, even when the alternator is good it will basically only trickle the battery...IE Doesn't charge it up well/fast like a car alternator.  So....starting it up every few days and not taking it for a nice ride or not putting a float charger back on it will do this.  These bikes apparently REALLY benefit from one of the newer AGM-style batteries.  I'm going to pop one in mine this weekend as mine is shot.

The first thing you need to do is fully charge the battery and then test it . -- I've seen brand new batteries that were junk . -- The second thing is to check and clean all electrical connections for the starting circuit . -- Starter could be the culprit as well . -- A starter that draws too much amperage will kill a battery in a hurry . -- Hope this helps -- Otto
