well i got the bike running. the problem was the ignition coils were installed wrong and the wires in the back were switched around. so thanks everybody for helping me solve that problem.

but now i cant get the bike to rev past 4000 rpm. i have the original air box installed. what could the problem be?

4000rpm under load? can you keep it in first gear and slowly allow it to climb beyond 4k? check timing with timing light.

Air filter clean?

yeah. when im riding it, thats as high as the RPM's go. no matter how slow i try to increase the throttle

I might be back tracking here a little bit, but have you put a timing light on it, revved the engine, and watched the timing marks? They should move as the engine builds RPM. If they don't the advance is bad.

ok. so i opened the side of the bike where the rotor is. and when i started the bike to check the timing, oil started spewing everywhere. Allot of oil. is this suposed to happen?

so i followed the manual and fixed the timing. it wasn't off by that much to begin with. the bike still wont rev past 4,000. i checked the charging volts and its getting about 13.4 which apparently isn't enough to keep the battery charged. but even though its not charging the battery would this keep it form revving?
i know i have to replace the rotor for the generator.
Is there something else i need to look at?
Has any one else had these problems with their bike?

my bike is he bike from hell. i replaced the generator rotor with  "NEW" one. now my bike has no charging volts at all. the voltmeter reads around 12.4. that is even less than before with the old one. does any one know what the problem could be? im so stumped.

Check all three yellow wires from the stator for continuity, check the regulator/rectifier, also maybe check the brushes in the alternator cover.
first bike: 1983 vt750c, my mommy gave it to me.
current: 1980 cb750k
