95 cb750 45,800 mi maintenance and upkeep help?

I just bought this nighthawk from a dealership about a week ago. It is my first bike and has pretty high mileage, but I checked it pretty thoroughly before I purchased it and everything seemed to be in good condition so I figured I shouldn't pass it up.

I've been riding it just about every day for the past week and put about 400 miles on it. So far I have not had any real problems with it but I want to maintain it so it lasts a lot longer and have noticed a couple things I should take care of.

Today I was having trouble getting it to start so I began to trouble shoot. I eventually realized the fuel line was disconnected and got it started but after removing the side covers and seat I took out the air filter, which was quite dirty, and cleaned it. The inside of the intake box and carbs were a bit oily. I drained the float bowls on the carbs and noticed what looked like a bit of rust and dirt. When cold cranking it in the morning to warm it up I have to leave the choke closed or it will cut off while idling. I also noticed a strange tapping noise a couple days ago that sounds like it's coming from the gas tank when I ride at lower rpms?
I also removed the two outer spark plugs to inspect, which were fine, and cleaned and oiled the chain.

I'm looking for advice on how to flush any unwanted debris from the engine, general maintenance and upkeep for a bike with this many miles and what this tapping noise might be coming from?

Any help is much appreciated 😊

Sounds like you are doing alright so far. If you want to flush the engine, just put some "SeaFoam" in the oil, run it around the block a few times, and change the oil. You can also add "SeaFoam" to the gas. It will not only keep the fuel system clean, it will stabilize the gas, and keep it from going bad. As for the ticking noise, it might be the valves needing adjusted.

Ok so seafoam to clean my engine and fuel system, cool...   im pretty familiar with what an engine that needs a valve adjustment sounds like and i dont believe thats where the sound is coming from. If i was to lightly knock the side of my gas tank with a knuckle its almost exactly the same sound im hearing while im riding. it will tap 3 or 4 times and then stop. i checked all around the tank and engine and dont see anything loose. could it be coming from inside the tank, carbs, or maybe some other part of the fuel system? its perplexing me because ive never heard it before and i dont want it to turn into something more serious.

thanks TOOLS

I'm wondering if the slapping noise might be my cam chain and if it's something I should be worried about?

You can download the Factory Service Manual from the manuals thread at the top of the home page. It will have detailed instructions on adjusting the cam chains.
