I was installing a cam into an engine, and have found something that has had me scratching. Now you won't believe this, but I actually went to that other forum with all the really knowledgeable experts, and tried to ask about this problem. After looking through their 30,011 categories I decided on one to post it under, but after 6 attempts to post it I gave up.
This is the problem. I have the crank set at the TDC timing mark.
I have the cam set with the notch at the top, and the slash marks going horizontally. However when I install the cam chain, and sprocket I get this.
I moved the cam chain a tooth back, and got this.
Which one is correct? After my failed attempt at asking for advice, I did what I do best, and fixed it!! I pulled that cam out, went into my parts stash, and found another cam. When I put the other cam in, the slash marks lined up perfectly. Guess that cam was defective. However according to the notch on the top, the retarded setting would have been correct on the first cam.
