Another carb question

stevew
I love this bike but it is driving me nuts. Okay, my 1980 k model are still having some carb issues. With the stock airbox new filter it is still struggling at highway speed, I thought it was possibly a starving for fuel problem but I don't think it is. I took the airbox off and put the pods back on and it runs good down the highway, so this would make me to believe that it is a lean issue. What do I need to do.

Everything is stock as far as jets and exhaust.

Any help would be appreciated.

I agree: it may be a fuel issue.  Here's a way to test it:

I'm guessing you're trying to get freeway speed in top gear.  I would try running around streets in lower gears (higher engine RPM) and see if it misses like it does on the freeway.  This will help determine if it's a feed issue.  I would expect it to miss or stumble at fairly high RPM in lower gears.

If it doesn't, then that would suggest the fuel feed is probably OK.  At that point, I'd look at loose carb boots (inlet and outlet sides) or perhaps ignition timing.  It could be that the advance mechanism isn't working right, and retarding the spark at higher RPMs.

Luke- It does this in all gears and starts cutting out at around 5000-5500 rpms with the stock airbox on it.  With the pods on it will accelerate hard through the gears up to 8000 rpms. With the stock airbox on it was struggling to get 65 mph let a lone maintain it. With the pods I ran it on a 20 mile trip to a ball game at 75-80 with plenty of power left(I was running a little late).

Information is missing.

PILOT AIR SCREWS would need adjustment with different air filters!!

Did you buy the motorcycle new?
IF it had pods on it it could have been rejetted. Stock jets???
Needle position stock? And are the needles adjustable?
Idle jets stock size?

Basically when you make less restriction on the AIR coming INTO the engine
the mixture gets leaner IF the exhaust is free flowing.
So if you have pods and stock exhaust not that much more air can come in because it can't go out of the stock restrictive exhausts.

A stock exhaust system is restrictive.

Did you buy a STOCK OEM filter for the stock airbox?

Lots of questions.
