Another stator cover leak question...

toothjockey
Hi All, awesome forum glad to have found it.

I just picked up a 81 cb750 custom last week and I'm getting to know her. The other day I had my first spirited ride and returned to a pool of oil. I narrowed the source down to the hole under the stator adjacent to where the cover bolts on, picture attached.

There's a ton of posts about the plastic wire grommet leaking, but I didn't find anything about this hole. Am I supposed to plug it up, or is the shape of the area supposed to prevent the oil from seeping out of the hole, and perhaps I have a larger issue?

Any ideas or clarifications appreciated.

Probably the crank seal behind the stator is leaking. There is not supposed to be any oil in the stator area.

Right, was confused on if this year was dry or wet. Shoot, hope I didn't over-rev while I was getting used to the gearing...read that that could create this issue. Please tell me I'm wrong??

You can over rev an engine, but the consequences of doing it would be a lot worse.

Should have been more precise...can it be a spun rod bearing? Getting ready for the worst, as I feel like this was my doing, was dry before I gave her hell. Will check into the seal asap.

Is the engine making a knocking sound? The only way a rod bearing could make an engine leak oil, is if it came through the side, bottom, top, front, or back of the case. Do you see any new holes about the size of a golf ball or larger?
