Hi all,
Been a while. Been out riding and covering as much ground as I could over the summer with my CB.
Now it's getting towards the COLD as hell ass months here in New Hampshire so... Back in the garage and back to the customization.
Figured I would pop back on here and share the work with you guys.
Hope your summer riding was at least half as good as mine.
Planning on a full hard tail conversion this winter, 16" apes, solo seat and completing the sticker tank.
This should be a fun fun project.
Always open to advise, opinions and questions.
Already feels good to be back.

Yup... I'm shopping around for a premade hard tail. Found a decent looking set up for about 270 bucks. I've never fabbed to that level so I will probably go with the pre made for safety reasons. (though I may try a hard tail fab on an old frame I have laying around just to give it a shot too).
I have a set of 1" diameter 16" apes that I'll have to do some mods to make fit right (and will have to change over grips, throttle etc to compensate.).
I'll be back in the garage tomorrow cutting the frame and doing some fab work for the bars as well as stripping the motor some more. I'll post pics as it moves along.

Thats exactly who I was looking in to actually... Contacted them and with the specific measurements, fab and delivery I'll be looking at $352.49 delivered.
Now if I can just come up with $352.49 haha.

When you find the $$$$ and call to order it, tell Kate I said "Hey". BTW did you know they have two different styles of hardtails for the DOHC? The one in the picture on the web site still uses the two tubes that run along side the backbone, and they have another that goes directly to the backbone, and does away with those two tubes. It is a lot cleaner, and more traditional looking, but you have to ask for it.

That's interesting. I wasn't aware, no.
Though I am kind of interested in the look the show on the page with the two tubes still intact. Kinda keeps the front with the CB look. But I will ask if they have some pics of the other design.
I've stripped the whole rear so I'm going to throw the parts up on the for sale area to try to help come up with some of the cost of the hard tail.
Might not see it happen till after the new year but, such is the life we lead my friend.

Checked on the rear you were talking about Tools. Yeah, they have it haha but it's 500 bucks...
That's above my price range.
So, I'll stick with the other one. hahahha
Thanks for the heads up though.

Looks like a fun project bud. Hanging off a pair of apes going down the road is a pretty cool feeling. I'll definitely be watching this take shape.
|
|
i too am going with the cycle one hard tail. they will weld it on for you as well if you chop up your frame and send it in. 6 week turn around time as of right now. i am not going with apes but i am using their hard tail lol
|
|
I'll be doing the cutting and welding myself... I prefer to do as much of my own work as possible. This being my first true hard tail conversion (done some just by making struts in place of the springs) I don't wan't to mess up by trying to fab my own.
But I'll take what I learn from this and try to fab one on a junk frame I have too.
Just for the experience.

Here's a question I'm hoping someone might have experience with.
So, since my motor is stripped down and, unfortunately while doing so I did bust some of the fins on the cylinder block. I'm considering a swap I found online. Apparently they have a larger cylinder block kit with pistons, rings etc... It makes the bike somewhere around an 860 give or take.
Has anyone done this and can you use the stock head and valves or would that need to change as well?
Any thoughts?

I'm thinking Cycle-X. You would not need to change anything. Just have the cylinders bored to fit the larger pistons.

I think what Trapper is saying is he found a setup with new jugs, since his got broken,so he wants to swap the whole deal over.
But,yes,a stock head and all will work just fine for those over-bored jugs.

Man,don't I know that feeling! They have a sweeeeet 4-2-1 for the DOHC bikes. I want one in a bad way.

Motors almost completely stripped... Just gotta get that rotor off then the crank can come apart... Pull it all out then I sand blast the whole crank and motor casing to paint it with some good high temp paint. Not that crappy rattle can the previous owner did.

Sand blasting will ruin your case, and damage the journals on the crankshaft. The best would be to soda blast the case, and just clean the crank with mineral spirits. Also the most abrasive thing that can be used on the case is glass beads. However I use "Easy Off" oven cleaner to clean engines before painting. Another thing is, Hi Temp paint SUCKS!!!! Just use a good enamel paint. It will more then hold up to the temps that these engines generate. If the engine gets hot enough to damage the enamel paint, you will need a new engine.

Good call on the sandblasting Tools. Thanks. I hadn't really thought about it but, I guess it is a fairly soft metal so... But I'm gonna disagree partly on the high temp paint. Though you're right, a lot of it does suck. You get what you pay for with it. There is some stuff that I have used in the past on engines that works great against heat and grease. I plan to make this a no holds barred, balls to the wall project so I won't spare the expense on the paint or powdercoating or parts or anything.
It's gonna probably take me a while now that I have gotten in to it and found so many lovely options for mods haha. But when she's done.. OH MAN At least I hope hahahahahaha
