Battery charged but starter just clicks

qwatch
Went to start my 93 this morning, but after starter appeared to briefly turn over engine, there were just fast clicks. Assumed battery was discharged but after it spent the day charging the same thing happened (even though the indicator lights and headlight were bright, and the clicking -- whatever it is -- was fast and vigorous). Any other obvious things to check (fuse, solenoid)? I'm pretty inept mechanically, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Could be those things but sounds like the starter is not engaging.Tap on it a few times.

I do not know the 93 but a common trick is to us a screwdriver and jump the terminals on the solenoid. If it starts then, replace the solenoid.

Thanks, guys. Tapping the starter didn't do the trick, but I'll try the solenoid when I get home tonight. Question though: "jump the terminals on the solenoid" -- don't quite follow -- bypass the solenoid?

older solenoids have 2 terminals, if you touch them both with a screwdriver shank, it bypasses.

Yes, that bypasses the solenoid.  How do you know battery is charged?  1st thing I'd do is jump it and see what happens.

just be sure that if you jump from a car, leave the engine OFF.

To trouble-shoot this thing don't jump from another vehicle. Jumper the two big solenoid connectors (from one to the other) make sure you don't make a short to ground.

A jump would help determine if the battery is the weak link though. If a jump from a non-running car works, then it is likely a battery issue.

Ended up being low (35-40) CCA in the battery. Got a new one and vroom, vroom. But many thanks for the suggestions -- a definite learning experience to draw on later.
