Re: Bike wont run with choke off

YES....It should run with the choke OFF, AFTER it is warmed up.

The idle air screws should be set at the number of turns shown in the workshop manual.

The lock nut should be tightened after you have adjusted the choke cable.
The choke cable must be adjusted BEFORE you even start the bike.
When the throttles are closed the choke knob should be all the way OFF.
Look into the intake of the carbs and make sure that when the choke butterfly is OPEN
that the choke knob is off(all the way pushed in).
When the choke is pulled out make sure the choke butterflies are closed all the way.
Tighten the lock nut.

Lucky,if his bike is like mine-and i'm pretty sure it is-he doesn't have a choke cable. It has a lever on the side. And the idle air screws dont have lock nuts. They just screw into the side of the carburetors.

Thanks for the info, just didin't want to create any extra confusion.

You can just call them mixture screws.

Some carbs the screw adjusts the amount of air by raising or lowering the slide.
On other bikes the "mixture" screw may be called a fuel enrichment screw
and gives more fuel to the idle mix.

The 72 has the choke lever. Im thinking of just going back to the stock air cleaner. These PODS are getting to be a headache.

I really want that chopper sound if I can get it, have heard some of the bikes on youtube that sound good with 4 smaller pipes, but none with 4 into 2's so I can tell the difference....
I can tell you with stright pipes your gonna piss alot of people off.  These motors are loud.  Back in the day we put snuff-or-nots in the pipe so you could adjust the sound.  But they do sound great! four into four is the way to go .

Yeah, I am thinking not pissing cops off is a good idea, especially since they pull me over and breathalize me for not using a turn signal.... true story... so I'm gonna try the 4-2's first, if I dont like it i will go with the 4-4's, thanks tho rr

The pods wont cause issues at idle or even under normal riding. The tuning issues with pods dont show up until 5,000+ rpm and heavy throttle.TYPICALLY.

Ditching the pods wont cure your idle issue.

Not trying to discourage you, just shooting you straight.

Whats it doing now?

If, you are getting spark, it must be a carburetor problem. Since, you say it is puttering I am guessing, you have spark. I would guess that your carbs are plugged up.

Unless the spark is severely weak, then I agree with Tools. I doubt it's a weak spark since you've had it running before.

Did you wash the bike? Lol, I did and it wouldn't start for the life of me, chased everything and it ended up being in the ignition case I got water into it, cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner and it was fine. Just another thing to check
