Bolt seals for rocker arm shaft

TheLastJoker
Hey guys,
During the removal of my rocker arms to get to the valve seals, I had to remove 4 long bolts that had seals around them.  One seal came out with the bolt, one was completely destroyed, and two stayed in.  My question is- what do they do and can they be replaced without removing the head?  Would an appropriately sized crush washer at the head of the bolt suffice?

Also, does anyone know any tricks for replacing the valve seals without removing the head?  I'm looking for a way to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinders when I remove the springs.  Thanks!

Those bolts do not use a washer, or a seal. What you see there looks like someone had it apart, and put silicone on the bolts when installing them (not needed.) However you should lube those bolts when installing them. Lubing them will make torquing them easier.
To remove the valve springs without removing, you can make an air fitting out of an old spark plug, and then use compressed air to hold the valve shut. Another way is to stuff a length of rope into the spark plug hole, and turn the engine over until the piston jams the rope against the valves. This will keep them from falling down.

Thank Tools  I'll dig out whatever gunk remains in the holes and thank the PO for the gift.  I really like the string in the cylinder idea!  We'll see how that works...
