Any chance it was actually a sorta purple color? Some silicone based fluids are colored like that.

In most cases, the top of the brake reservoir says what type of fluid it is. In most cases, it is now DOT4. Most bikes I have seen do this.

You said clutch didn't you, well it is still likely to be dot 4 or your cover may say dot 3 + 5 or something like that, which means 3 - 5.1. I would not use dot5.
