Ok,for anyone else that had this question here we go. I figured it out.
Valve cover hose goes to the middle spigot on the breather canister. That allows the oil vapors to recirculate back to the airbox, which is where the top spigot on the canister goes. The very bottom spigot on the canister(below the filter) vents to atmosphere. On DOHC bikes this vent had a plug in the bottom of it for draining. There are differences in oil tanks. Some have two "vent" tubes,my '76 only has one.For the single tube tanks run the vent from the oil tank to the spigot on the very most rear part of the engine case, what you would call the transmisson vent.If you have a two tube tank one goes to the atmosphere. The oil tank does this so any overflow will re-enter the engine. On the pre-76 bikes this is the tube that delivered oil to the automatic chain oiler via the same routing, but there was an internal sheet metal pan inside the engine case that directed this oil the where it needed to go.
So.simplified version:
Breather canister:
Top spigot- airbox
Middle spigot- valve cover
Bottom spigot- atmosphere
Oil tank with single vent:
Over flow back to transmission spigot
Oil tank with 2 vents:
This does not apply to my bike so i didnt pursue it thoroughly, sorry.
One goes to atmosphere, and the other to the tranny spigot.I dont know which
Note, after correcting this my "countershaft leak" has stopped all together.
