CB750K3 Oil pressure steadily incresing over the past few months

Luccondon
1973 CB750 (less than 15,000 miles) PO was not good about upkeep at all...

Hi All,

I have noticed that my oil pressure has been steadily climbing over the past few months to the point where it is now over 100psi when I start the bike up.  After running for 15 mins it drops to maybe 60psi, but will still reach 100 when I am over 4,000rpm.

This has also coincided with a fairly small leak from the front of the engine between the 1st and 2nd headers, I am thinking that the two things may be linked?

I have replaced the filter and changed the oil twice in the past 3 months and it hasn't made a difference, so should I be dropping the oil pan to check out the condition of the screen?  Or is such a climb in pressure too big to just be caused by a slightly dirty screen?

I am a bit of a DIY'er, and have changed out my coils and done some other gasket replacement on the headers, but in terms of disassembling parts, I am kinda scared of messing something up.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Oil leak would not cause it to climb in oil pressure. If the screen was clogged it would lose oil pressure. The only things I could think of would be the check valves in the oil pump, and the one in the oil filter mounting bolt. I would try "Seafoam" in the oil. This stuff will really clean it out and maybe free up a stuck check valve, if that is what it is.

Thanks TOOLS,

I was more thinking that the leak could have come about because of the climb in pressure, causing some oil to push through the gaskets; possible?

I will give the Seafoam a try, is there an amount that I should be pouring in there?

Thanks,

Just pour a can in the oil, and ride the bike 10-20 miles, and change the oil.
