the sohc coils ARE different. The wires are attached but not only that, they are also 5ohms whereas the dohc coils were 3 or so. You can use the dohc coils though. Spark will be stronger but the points will wear out sooner and if your charging system is not working right, will drain the battery.
Plus side besides spark is the ability to use any wire.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Yes coils can definitely break down when hot. If you have another set try them.

Sounds good guys. Partsnmore has new coils for $30 each so I think I'll order them and see what happens. I'm sure the ones I have are original. I'll check all the caps for sure before I put them on. I'll put new points in for the heck of it. Thanks again for all your input and I'll update this when I get the coils.      Paul

Have you taken the ends off the plug wires ( they unscrew ) check them if the wires are burned back into the insulation cut the insulation back to good wire and reinstall caps. To find your problem cylinder start motor and spray water on each exhaust pipe. The ones that don't boil the water instantly are suspect no fuel or no spark. We use ultrasonic cleaning to do our carbs this is the only way to get them clean.

Hey Mad Dog, all ignition components are new. Spark plugs, coils and wires, new breaker plate with points and condensers, everything. But here is what I found: after pulling the carbs off for the millionth time, I finally noticed the cast tube on the carb body that the main jet screws into was cracked. I filed all around the housing and put JB Weld all the way up. Seems to run good now but not sure how the JB Weld will hold up. I got the stuff that said "for gas tank repair". #4 carb was starting to crack too so I did that one too. I would feel a lot better if I could buy a decent set of carbs to rebuild and put those on without spending a ton of cash. You know anybody with some? Thanks for the reply.    Paul
