Cam Chain replacement

RJD
I am looking at an 81 cb750 f.  Owner states that the cam chain needs to be replaced because it fell off its sprocket, besides that the bike is in good rideable shape and needs nothing.  On a scale of 1 -10, 1 being easiest, what type of job is this?  I am mechanically inclined.  This would be my first bike (cb750 f is favorite) and I dont mind the work, just dont want to get in over my head from jump street.

Also, what other types of things could be wrong if the cam chain has fallen off its sprocket?

Many thanks, Roger

On your bike, maybe a 5 or so. If you have not done it, get the manual here. I would think you just need to pull the tank. Remove the valve cover and you have access. From there, break the old chain and attach the new one to the old chain and pull it through. If the old one fell off though, you might want to make sure the tensioner is working right and the sprockets are ok.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

If you do have to replace the chains , try as best you can to find some factory chains . -- Even good USED factory chains are better than ANY aftermarket replacement found to date . -- Best case scenario would be to find a set of cam sprockets AND chains . -- Check out ebay , craigslist , or you may get lucky and find some here , or on the DOHC site . -- Good luck -- Otto
