Cam Timing

Pat Lackey
I have been trying to sort out carb problem (Wetting plugs, spitting with odd backfire) I decided to start from scratch Off with Rocker cover Valve clearances ok,But when  I follow  Haynes to check Valve timing I find With cams faceing plugs and dots on cam chain sprocket lined level  up with  cyl head the F mark on timing is lined up not the T as the book says is next step to rearrange sprocket to have the T lined up.

Now this is only a thought here. the sohc bikes use a chain, I dont know if yours does but this may apply with geared cams too.
On the sohc, this would usually indicate that the cam and timing are off from each other. I would have to break a chain link and turn the cam a tooth or 2 depending on how far off it is and then rejoin the chain.
If you are gear drive, you might just need to note which direction the cam has to turn and pull it out, turn it and reseat to correct the off timing.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

It is possible, I guess it depends on how much slack you have after loosening the tensioner. Always worth a try.
