Well I have finished my 1981 Winter Blues build, are they ever really done though, and I got to thinking about maybe doing a cam upgrade on it. My buddy just hardtailed an old Kawasaki KZ1000p, and he just did a cam upgrade on it, and man that thing is fast! I know that mine is only a 750 but I was thinking about doing the cam upgrade on it, my problem being, where do I find the parts or kit for it? Do you guys have any recommendations for kits, and where to order them from? My bike is a 1981 CB750K, that I have put a 4-1 exhaust, pod filters and rejetted the carbs accordingly. Would I need to do another rejet if I did the cam upgrade? Is it honestly even worth it to do an upgrade on it, or would you guys just leave it as is? Its plenty fast enough for me, although the weather around here hasnt been cooperating so I have not had the chance to shoot for the ton lol. Any and all advice is appreciated!
I know enough to get me in trouble.

You would not be SPEEDING now, would you? You could use CB 900 cams, a Cycle-X cam, or a Web cam. As for jetting, you would need to install the cams, and run it, then do a plug chop to tell.
I have a P-14 that I am wanting to CHOP someday. How about some pictures of your buddies?

<quote author="TOOLS1"> You would not be SPEEDING now, would you? Me speed? Never........ If I did 900 cams in it would any cams from the 900 series fit it, or would I need a specific model since mine is a 750k? Here are a few pics of my buddies bike, I want to say he got the rear section from TC Bros, but Im not sure on that, and also a pic of the cam swap he just did on his. That bike started as a 96? KZ1000p, old police bike, it looks nothing like that now though lol.

I am in the process of installing some 900 cams. If you want some, there are plenty of guys on the F site (cb1100f.net) that are selling them for reasonable prices. They are racing them and putting in 1100F cams or selling their out of spec 900F cams (they'll still be way bigger/better than the 750K stock cams). Post something on the buy/sell section and some people will get back to you. I did it and ended up finding a local guy in Canada that I could drive to and picked them up. I also got a really good line on a 900F he is looking to sell, and a set of the 900F piggyback shocks for a great price.
I can't comment on a performance boost yet, but everything that I've heard is that it is a straight drop in, no jetting required. You will apparently feel a significant performance increase in the mid range.

btw, don't buy 1100F cams unless you want to do significant engine work. You'll need to modify piston indents, get stiffer springs etc. They're much bigger than the 900 cams.

That is pretty nice. It does look like it is a TC Bros universal kit. I am planning on keeping the rear suspension on mine. However I am going to change the wheels to a set I got off a 79 SR 650. 19" front, and 16" rear. I am also planning on keeping the original tank/side covers with the black/white paint. However where the star/emblem was on the tank I am going have a decal made of two cartoon pigs having coitus. then around them will be a circle with a slash going through it. I am still trying to decide if I want to keep the running boards. I am going to do away with that crapy heel/toe shifter though.

Thanks Sees, I might check there. Does anything else need to be changed besides the cams? New chain, anything like that? That sounds like a pretty good idea tools, you will have to post pics if you ever get around to it!

No new chain needed, but you should check it to make sure it's within spec while you're there. Also check the state of your cam chain tensioners. The tensioners can fail and break stuff. Sent from my BlackBerry device

Thanks Lucky, I took Sees advice and posted on that site and already someone has gotten back to me. He is asking 70 for a set that are all within specs, but he is in SW Indiana which may or may not be close to me, and may save me shipping. Im thinking thats not a bad deal, what do you guys think?

Any progress on this set up. I am thinking about doing the same (900 cam on a 750 F) from what I have read its just a simple drop in thing and vroom. Is that so?
I found a set from a guy for $85 shipped

I have done it. I have a noticeable bump in horsepower judging by the seat of the pants dyno, but it is hard to tell what is caused by the increased compression ratio (from relapping the valves which I did at the same time) and the hotter cam.
Apparently you get an even bigger bump if you degree the cam a little bit, but you require slotted gears to do that, and I am not up for that investment yet and I've heard it's problematic to do that on a daily rider as opposed to a track bike that is getting the head redone all the time.

So is it as simple as the say, just drop in? Do you need to split chain? or does the cam just slide out?

Just loosen the tensioner and the cams just slide out.
Here is a thread on installing cams. This pretty much walks you through everything you need.
