Hello first time post and need some help.
This is my bike and it is turning into quite the project. I have worked with carbs before on snowmobiles but never a motorcycle. Basically I bought the carbs and totally rebuilt them cleaned everything replaces all seals needle jets were fine and has 105 mains.
I can get it to fire and stay running with choke full on and throttle about 1/4 open then dies as soon as let off throttle or take choke off.
The carbs are a set of PD42A's I had have played with the pilot jet quite a bit with no luck. I do not have a gas tank so I am filling the bowls with a pop bottle and tube once full I take it off (not sure if it needs constant fuel to stay running or will run off the bowls for a min or so) and for the sake of seeing if I can getting this thing running it does not have the cone filters or air box on yet (don't have them) will be eventually running pod filters, has a 4 into 1 exhaust on it.
Please help.

Ok I worked on it a little more today and it seems that there is just no fuel getting in there. It will idle fine with either no choke as soon as its burn up....stalls.
Could it be a vacuum leak? if so where? How important are the top cap gaskets, they are the only thing that wasn't replaced and was once told they were more for keeping debris out, but now I am doubting that.
Looked closer at the carbs they are PD 42B's with 110 mains.
Please help this is frustrating me!

You might have a vacuum leak, but I can tell you for sure that your pilot jets are plugged. You can not properly clean them unless you remove them. I put a post up in the repair how to section here that shows step by step how to safely remove them. Just do a search for removing pressed in pilot jets.

Thanks Tools. I ready your write up on removing them, will be doing that tonight.

Thanks again tool! Two of the jets were completely clogged other two partially. Got them all back in bike fired right up with pilot screws 2 turns out and seemed to be idling fine, when I blip the throttle it wants to race on me and won't come back down. I moved the pilot screw both ways and no change, keeps wanting to race on me.
Any suggestions?
And yes I know I spelled idling wrong in the heading, ha!

Two things. First check for vacuum leaks between the carbs, and head. Second sync the carbs.

You do realize that the 750 Hondamatic is the BEST motorcycle made!!!!!!! Why would you put a K model engine in it? It's all wrong!!! No wonder it will not run right. TOOLS
P.S. what did you do with the matic parts (tank, seat, exhaust, and engine?)

HAHA!
I sold all including the motor but....the guy that bought the motor on ebay lives in Austria and didn't realize it was a local pickup only auction, long story short he let me keep the $100 winning bid for the trouble. So it's sitting in my garage now. Its in good shape no broken fins and doesn't leak oil. Compression is bad in all the cylinders. Just didn't really want an automatic motorcycle, actually didn't know they even made them until I arrived to see this one.
As time permits I may rebuild it and use it for another project or if someone is interested, sell it. I have had it up ebay a few times after the first one fell through and got no hits.
Wanna buy it????

Where is it located? Did you sell the tank to a guy in Kansas City?
I have let two friends ride the Toolmatic, and one went out, and bought one. The other is still looking for one. How many motorcycles can go from 0-120 in second gear? Well maybe a few of the new sport bikes, but they are ugly. TOOLS

Tank went to someone in MN. I am located in Auburn hills, MI.

Ok got home and did the leak test with some carb fluid and no real change. Still high idle didnt get any higher or lower. Are the key holes cap gaskets real important? they aren't in the best shape.
Also when it does idle at a decent rpm there is a poofing noise coming from what sounds to be carb #1.
Any suggestions welcome!

It ain't easy, took me months, first I found an air leak in one of the carb to box boots.
Cleand carbs, heck, maybe 4 times, last time did the jets thing like Tools says.
On the bench, adjusted the butterfiles so they all sat real nice when they snap shut.
Installed carbs with the air screws, the ones you can get to on the bottom, the brass ones,
at 2 turns out from seat.
Adjusted the idle knob, the one under the carbs, all the way out, or back.
Took it out, it had no idle and felt like it was starving at like 1/4 throttle and below.
Once it got over maybe 3ooorpm, it came to life.
Back in the garage, turned the 4 air screws out another half turn.
Still no idle, but pulled strong all thru the throttle.
Back to the garage, started turning the idle knob in till rpms started to climb with out blipping the gas.
Backed the knob till it kept maybe 1000 rpm.............that worked for me.

That carb poofing, make sure the slide that gets sucked up and open with vacum is falling shut
with no throttle. With the airbox off, and the choke open, you can put your finger in there
when it's not running and lift it up. Should drop closed with no resistance whatsoever.
It' doesn't, check for varnish or gunk in there binding it up.

an intake valve not closing or sealing might cause it to
kinda poof back thru the carb also.
Acompression test should show that, a bad valve thing.

Grady, he is working with keyhole carbs not CVs.

The gaskets on top of the carbs will not affect anything. They just seal out water, and dirt. Have you synced the carbs yet? Also Grady is right about checking the valves. They should be .002 on the intake, and .003 on the exhaust.

I'll check the valve lashing this weekend when I get a chance, it is the dream cruise in Detroit after all. I forgot that that has to be done thank you for reminding me.
The boots to the motor is ther a rule of thumb for how tight the clams are? I can tightest them all the way so the clamps are touching and they still don't feel tight they are just bending to touch, is that just to tight? Should they just be snug?
I also dont have anything on the carbs for filtration, no box or pods, would this cause the revving?
I haven't gotten the carbs synced yet it reves to uncontrollably. I would liked it get this engine racing solved before I take it to the shop to get synced up. They have been benched synced however when I rebuilt them.
