Carb Cleaning aka Battery Tray Removal Nightmare

justin_m85
Hi folks,

I'm having trouble finding an answer to my questions and I thought this place would be my best bet.

I recently bought a 1979 CB 750F in great shape.  The guy I bought it from said the carbs were dirty so I figured it would be a good chance for me to learn how to work on the bike.  Anyway, I was able to get the carbs out without taking the battery tray out.  However, I can't get the air box and carbs back in without taking the battery tray out.  Can anyone help me out and provide some insight as to how this can be done????

I have the same bike.  The air box has to go in first, and pulled back as far as you can get it.  I loosened the bolts on the battery box, but did not remove it.  Then carefully work the carbs back in.  Also, much easier to get your throttle and choke cables back on when the carb rack is half way back in.  If you wait until the carbs are back in, it becomes a game of twister and some creative bracing and fishing while frustration levels go through the roof.  At least it did for me when I broke the pull side a couple months ago.  Carbs need to come out, and go back in from the right side.

man, I don't mess around anymore.
seat, rear fender, battery off and out.
unplug everything by the cage, pull the cage.
clamps off, pull the box back, carbs off and out right side.
yank the cables
carbs on bench
then the box will come out if you want.

1, 2 hours max.

Exactly as motogrady said . You will get good at it because they will come of quite a few tines in the course of its life. Start at three rear and work your way forward to remove, and front back to replace. Don't try to short cut, it really takes longer. And don't forget to attach cables when the carb rack is half in!

Good luck!

If you loosen the clamps and push the carby boots as far forward as you can, onto the head stubs, it will give you more room to work.

I made a video about how I remove them.  You might find it helpful.
