Caswell gas tank epoxy failure!

GearBocks
I bought a Caswell tank sealer kit believing the hype that it would be gas and ethanol gas resistant. That is wrong. After curing completely for 4 days it has begun to leech into my gas turning it a dark yellowish color and fouling my spark plugs, clogging my Carburetors and causing my bike not to run at all. When I called Caswell and talked to the tech he said he'd never heard of that before (bs) and would give me a great deal if I wanted to buy more!? He said if I had mixed it wrong it wouldn't have hardened at all. Mine was ultra hard, I even used some of the extra to glue one of my fairings back together, which is holding great. I prepared the tank and the product correctly and had my father (an expert technician) watch over me while I did it to make sure I did it per the instructions. This product has ruined my 82 cb750f gas tank and Carbs after it hardened for 4 days! I am very disappointed and frustrated because I just finished bringing my cb back to life and actually rode it 2 nights ago! The next morning it wouldn't start and when I tracked the problem down it was the gas! I learned my lesson, I have a steel tank and I should have just gotten it welded and been done with it. Only a fool would put glue in a steel tank and expect it to work, this is a fool who is warning you. Don't buy this product!!!!!!!

I did my 74 tank with a tank liner and it was in bad shape.  The post is on here somewhere.  I even forget what I used.  Anyway, so  far so good.  You can remove that stuff with paint stripper.  Just don't get it on your paint.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you.

For what it's worth, my 81K tank was sealed when I bought it.  No issues in the 2 years I've had it.

Did you use a fuel filter?

Caswell's sealer is the best I have ever used!!!

All I did was follow instructions and let it dry for 3-4 days.

I mixed white colorant with mine which was approved by Caswell.
I got one kit frm Casweel and 1 2oz. jar of epoxy colorant to mix from TAP plastics.
It was the pre mixed premium one. I mixed the whole kit.

Excellent results.

What's the deal with all the duct tape? Just curious. Tank looks great. Sorry for the partial hijack.

I can tell you why the gas looks dark yellow.
IT is not ruining your bike.
This new fuel does turn yellow after a few days of sitting.
I have notice it myself but it is not the Caswelll tank liner.

Has any of the liner come off?

Has any of the liner cracked?

Also the Caswell liner epoxy is AMBER YELLOW when dry unless you put colorant.

I think what is going on is you see the yellowish liner inside the tank and think
it is coming out of your tank.

Thats what is happening.

I covered the tank with plastic then I put duct tape on the plastic to make it easier to grab while I was rotating the tank without ripping the plastic. Just another layer of protection.

These tank liner threads are always entertaining. For the guys having problems with liners: dont take that the wrong way-i seriously feel for you guys. So many opinions, but I have to admit,it sure does seem like alot of them fail. Do any motorcycle manufacturers line tanks on new bikes?

You can wash out a gas tank as many times as you want but when the heat is applied and it gets red hot there is still gas in the fabric of the metal and fumes will build up and ignite . If you are lucky and all the caps are off you may end up shook up and singed eyebrows or burns on your face or hands.

If you go to welding web.com you can read many stories of accidents.

A refinery accident happened this same way in California when  a welder used a hand grinder to cut a metal tube  that had previously had some petroleum product in it and 4 workers were burned to death.
The forman told the company he did not think it was safe. The company management said if you don't do it
we will get someone else to do it, Otherwise they threatened to fire him.

A high school student was killed this same way when he took a 50 gallon drum and washed it out and then took a 4 inch grinder with cut off wheel to it and it blew up and killed the young man.
He was in a high school shop class and the instructor was not informed about the danger.
The steel drum had previously held coconut oil in it, which had some petroleum based product .
