Cleaning Chrome

slash360-2
I just got a set of factory 4 to 4 exhaust for my 81 cb750C from ebay. The pipes are in decent shape, baffles are good, and visible chrome is good.I have surface rust inside #2 and#3 head pipes and back of silencers.Any tips on cleaning,? Is re-chroming an option? I'd like to get them looking good as possible before putting them on bike. Thanks for help. Steve in NC.

The surface rust inside the #2 and #3 pipes is nothing to worry about. If you are concerned some medium grit sand paper will remove it and a coat of High Temp Engine enamel paint will give a little added protection. Usually that surface rust will just burn away. Some form of rust remover or something that will permanently stop the rust on the back of the silencers should do the trick. Alternatively getting the silencers rechromed will do wonders for the appearance.

For all metal Im polishing, I use Mothers mag and aluminum polish. That stuff works wonders, especially on chrome.

Late reply I know, but just in case,

The best rust remover on chrome is WD-40 and med-fine steel wool.  Never use Sand paper, it's way over kill and can ruin the remaining good chrome.  The rust will always come back eventually so on normal parts I do multiple car-wax coatings but this won't work on hot parts like exhaust.  All you can do is get some clean transmission oil (Won't smoke up like motor oil) and gently rub a thin coat all over the pipes once in a while to discourage ruts.

Hope this helps

Hello, I just bought a 1999 CB750X.  It's so dirty...it seems the bike was wrapped in plastic and I have stains from this on the fenders which are plastic and stains on the gas tank.  I don't know what product I can use that wont ruin any of these surfaces and some parts are dull.  If you might have some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank You

I think Mother's and Meguire's make plastic polishes that work pretty good for cleaning.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
