Hey! I've been having some troubles with my 1981 cb900c.
It has a continuous backfire coming out of the left side muffler, and it also has troubles starting up after leaving it overnight.
If I start it up after it's warm it has no trouble at all, but if leave it for extended periods the only way to get it to start is by spraying quick start into the airbox.
I did a bunch of work on it already, which helped a lot.
Before it was bogging out extremely bad, was really difficult to start, and was backfiring constantly.
I took the carbs out to do a rebuild, but noticed they looked almost brand new inside, and didn't end up replacing anything.
I checked the valve clearance, and replaced a few shims, which fixed most of my problems, except like I said, it still backfires, and it still has a bit of a hard time starting cold.
TOOLS suggested it might be a vacuum problem, or maybe I need to replace the valves in the carb, but I feel like if it helped that much to change the shims, maybe there's something I'm missing in relation to that.
Here's how much room I have between the cam and the top of the shim starting from left to right:
In brackets is what the original clearance was. The manual suggests having between .06-.13mm clearance.
Exhaust: .127 (.038) /// .101 (.051) /// .076 /// .076 /// .127 /// .076 /// .101 /// .076
Intake: .101 (.127) /// .076 (.127) /// .076 /// .076 /// .127 /// .076 /// .076 /// .076
If you're wondering why I changed the two shims on the intake, I had to rearrange a few because I didn't have the right ones lol.
Thanks, any suggestions would be great!
