Cylinder painting

For anyone with experience painting cylinders - what have you done with the rubber dampers that are in between the fins when you've painted the cylinders?

Just paint around them. Thats what I did and it worked out OK. They are a real pain to try to get out and back in.

Thanks. I took two out as a test and they tore as they came out. The Honda parts lists show them available, but at over $3.00 each.
