Dads 1981 here to get it fired up after 29 year of rest

shultz_1978
So here is the deal my dad just got this 1981 cb ? o way 750 wheeling and dealing. Call and asked my if he could drop it off for some cleaning and to get it running again. The last time it was plated was 1984. The guy that had it Bought a small farm in the early 80's and just did not have the time to ride it with the farm and work so it sat in the garage till today when it was loaded on to a trailer and brought here to me.

So I have started pulling it a part to get it cleaned up and get the carbs off. I have got it this fore and ( I know I know) this has come up one two many times but how do you get the carbs out with it two foot by 3 foot air box.  I just don't want to brake any thing. This should be fun. Both of my bike are single over heads. Maybe I well try it out once its running and give my report on both bikes.

Very cool! I've been wanting to try a DOHC myself. The first time I went shopping for one I ended up with the chopper. The last time I ended up with the Harley...I'm not shopping anymore! But I would love to hear what you think about the twin cam once it's all done.

You just have to wrestle those carbs out from between the head, and the airbox. No easy way to do it.

If you remove the battery box, the airbox will slide back far enough so the carbs won't bind between the insulators and the air boots and come out easily. The whole process is a lot more work, but there's less wiggling.

Ditto what icerigger said. There is a bolt on top of the airbox that you can loosen to let it slide back. Then loosen of the throttle and choke cables, pull it halfway out, and then fully remove the cables. The carbs should pull right out!
Just as a side note, to get the battery box out, pull the rear plastic fender of the frame, gives you more room to manhandle the battery box out!

Nice find, it looks like it is mint!

Took the carbs apart and spayed some brake cleaner in the feed line to the ass. pump jet. Left it set for about ten minutes and tried the air again. Nice it is working now to put them back together.

Spent the whole day at the therapist office today. Got some things done on pops bike. Carbs clean and put back on. Clean cleaned and more cleaning.

Use wD-40 on the bottom of the tank.

Meguiars ultra cut and then some ultra finish polish on the top of the tank.

Used Never dull and Blue Magic on the front fender

Maybe we will go see the therapist again tomorrow.

Did a little more cleaning and go the filter and oil changed. Put a little oil down the cylinders cranked it over put in the plugs nothing. I got spark no fuel. HHHHHHMMMMMM

So far I like the 78 and older. These carbs are a pain to get to.

Did you clean out the gas tank?  There will be varnish within it.  I'd suggest Techron, or some other uber-strong fuel system cleaner (SeaFoam won't be strong enough, for this application), and put it in, full-strength, seal the tank, then swirl it around for a minute.  Let it sit for 10 minutes, then repeat, and drain it into your car's gas tank (near full, to dilute it).

When you get it running, I'd suggest using SeaFoam in the crankcase:  add the proper amount to the oil, start it up, and run it on a short ride (shift through all five gears!), until the engine is warmed up to an oil temperature of 180 F, or higher (5 minutes, minimum), then drain the oil, and change the filter -- it should be coal black, with carbon, and varnish deposits which are suspended in the oil, having been flushed out of the engine, and the transmission.  You won't need to do this again, for at least 20,000 miles, maybe more, if you use a modern (SM or higher rated) oil, as they will keep everything pretty clean.

That bike really is a time capsule.  Thanks for sharing this re-build process with us.  Cheers!

blk I am getting fuel to the carbs. Cleaned all that stuff tank, petcok and lines. After putting it all back together I put gas in the tank then went one by one and made sure that the carbs was getting fuel. I just can not see in the intake side to see if the acc. pump is working and the plugs are dry. So the fuel is not getting to the cylinders.

Sgtslag thanks for the tips Tank is cleaned. Once I get it running I plan on ruuning some cleaner throw the bike.
