Do I need the diode? & Different kinda rectifier

Rewired the chopper this weekend and noticed it didn't have a diode. I know what a diode does in general, but not what their function is on these bikes.

Also, this rectifier is different from my others. I was wondering if the charging system on an early motor doesn't require a diode somehow.

And I went by this diagram for mt bike, which doesn't show the diode.

Sooooo,now what?

I think it looks good. It looks like the rectifiers I have.

My other two rectifiers are about 3'' tall and hollow. This one is only about 1'' tall. What do you think about the diode?

A diode only lets current flow in one direction.
The diode on this bike is for the clutch safety switch function.

The rectifier you are holding is the original and makes 1/2 wave AC into 12v DC.
You got to have it.

The diode it it has one is about 1/2 inch square black cube with two prongs.

A lot of confusion here about the names of the parts.

3 inch tall ? what is it... Photo?

If I was doing this I would follow the wiring diagram in the Clymer's manual.

This "chopper" wiring diagram leaves out many things.

Maybe you can use both.

If you use the stock rectifier then you will need the stock style regulator.

My other, later style, rectifier is what I was talking about is three inches tall. Since the diode is for the neutral safety switch that explains why its not needed in that style diagram. Thanks Lucky, you just eased my mind.
