Electrical Problem

Joeschmo
So, I just bought a 1980 CB 750 last week that needed a fair amount of work, but it ran fine. I rode it for a few hours that day, fine, no problems. I am a new rider, just got my permit last week and it was my first day riding, and I laid it down once around a turn. I am fine, and the bike seemed fine it started right back up. There were a couple issues I fixed when I got to the nearest hardware store and then I rode it home. In the driveway, it stalled, and then wouldn't start back up.
What is happening is the lights come on, and when I hit the engine start button I just hear a click, and nothing happens. It had been completely tripping and turning off when I hit the button before, and now I replaced the battery cables and fixed the rust around where the ground connects and it will stay on after I hit the button. But still no starting, and a simple click. Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I doubt this is important but what I fixed when I got to the hardware store is that the front brake fluid resevoir was cracked and leaking, so it is now JB welded and refilled. The stator case on the side of the engine was also cracked, and is also now JB welded.
Also I had a hard time starting it at the hardware store, but that was just because the wires the guy before me had on the battery were taped and the connection was a little loose. Tightening it up with a screwdriver and jiggling the tape got it to start.

First thing I would check is the battery good? 2nd if you can get it running, is it charging?  Check fuses front to back. Maybe one is loose?  Can you bump start it?

I checked the fuses under the ignition, and the one on the left side. I checked the charge on the battery and that's all good. Are there other fuses that I may be missing?

Its the little things that sometimes we forget to check. 1st is the kill switch in the run position?  2nd does it have a clutch switch?  Do you need to pull the clutch in and hit the button to start it?  Check to make sure the clutch switch is not pushed to far into the housing and that it closes all the way when the clutch is pulled.  Also when you hit the button and here a click does your headlight go out?  You mentioned that the stator cover is cracked and jb welded?  Pull it off and and make sure if there are any wires underneath that they arent  pinched or broken.  Try laying a screw driver across the posts of the solenoid and see if it starts, if so then the issue is somewhere else.  sounds like alot but its pretty simple and quick to check all of those things.
I know enough to get me in trouble.
