Float discrepancies '79-'81?

nilsthenomad
I ordered a new set of floats off of VintageCB750.com the other day for my '81 750K and they emailed me to let me know that they had sent me '79 750K floats and that they didn't make the '81's yet and therefore I would most likely want to return them. I know that the '79-'82's share a ton of common parts. Does anyone know if there is any difference in the floats from '79-'81?

I think they're different.

81's definitely don't have adjustable floats, and I believe the 79's were.

I think you can tell them apart by their colour.  My 81's are brown.

Yep, it's different.

I just looked up the parts schematics on Bike Bandit. They have different part numbers.

1981 CB750K: BikeBandit P/N: 582854

1979 CB750K: BikeBandit P/N: 582859

So close, yet so different!

Just because the part numbers are different does NOT mean the parts are not interchangeable.

Many Honda parts interchange even though they have different numbers.
The numbers are only to tell which model they originally were on.

You have to measure and compare the parts.

I think the only difference is the 79s are adjustable and the 81s aren't. As Lucky says, measure or otherwise see if they fit.

Got them in the mail yesterday. They are exactly the same size as the '81s however do not attach to the back of the float needle like the 81's do. I installed them just to see if and how they worked. The only problem I noted was that that lack of attachment to the needle relies on gravity and fuel pressure to drop the needle as the float drops since the float doesn't pull the needle down with it. They worked fine for a short test run on very clean carbs, but I'm sure the moment the needles got even a little sticky they might not let just gravity drop them. Think I'm going to return them for now. Vintagecb750.com let me know they'd have '80-'82 floats in production in the next 2-4 months. In the mean time I'm just gonna patch up mine. Probably what Lucky was implying with his question.

The thing that gets me about Bike Bandit is they use the factory microfisch, but their own part numbers, so cross-referancing to other sights ain't easy. Just about every other OEM parts supplier uses Honda's part numbers.

81 floats are Honda PN: 16013-413-851 (replaces 16013-413-751)
While 79's are PN: 16013-679-005

and are still available from places like  http://www.hdlparts.com , http://www.servicehondapsn.com , or my current favorite for referance use is http://www.hondapartsnation.com because their reverse look-up feature also includes "where used" button that shows what other bikes it was used on.
You will freak out when you see where all Honda used the floats you need.

Hey! I have 79 floats in my 81. Now, I spose i dont know if they're completely 81 carbs, but mine have the adjustable floats and my needles sit just fine.
