Electrical System Plz help! :)

Jake1980CB750
Hey there! I recently bought a 1980 750 and it was running beautifully until this morning. :/  When I hit the ignition button, I hear the starter solenoid click, so I know thats not the problem. The battery is brand new so that is also ruled out. We jump started it this afternoon and it roared to life, only to die when we disconnected the jumper cables. I haven't encountered anything like this in my short motorcycle experience and was hoping that some of you could shed some light on my issue. Thanks for any replies guys. :)

Clean your battery connections. Most honda bikes will not run if there is no battery. If you have a broken wire or a real bad connection on the battery it will do just what you describe. I would say it is the connections on the battery itself. Use a multimeter and check the battery voltage it should read between 12 and 12.5.

Yeah I followed your advice and did that. Took all the cables out and sand blasted the connections clean. Unfortunately this did not solve my problem. With a fully charged battery the bike will run beautifully for about a week, then slowly starting will get worse and worse until it just wont start. This is frustrating seeing as right now it's my only mode of transportation.  Thanks for your suggestion, and any help  is greatly appreciated! =)

If the bike is running on a fully charged battery for awhile and then having problems it seems that the battery is not getting charged while running ... check the stator output according to the manual.

Use the manual on the site if you need to. Like above check the alternator output between the 3 fields to see if it is working. What is the output at the Battery while the bike is running? Get a reading while bike is off then when ideling, and again at about 2000-3000 RPM.
The rectifier can be tricky to check but the manual gives you the resistance readings you will be looking for. Other than that the only thing left is the regulator. Make sure all your connections are good and clean.
