Engine/Transmission oil for 1977 cb750a

2005triker
New to the site!  I recently purchased a 1977 Honda CB750A (Hondamatic) and am wanting to change the oil.  The manual calls for 30 W or 10W40 with API - SE.  So far I've been unable to find oil with the API-SE but i'm sure someone out there has found a successful alternative.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm not 100% on what you should be considering regarding the selection of the oil; many people believe motorcycle engines require different additives and compositions than automotive oils, but I can tell you that you can stop searching for SE-rated oils. It's an obsolete rating and if you find any on a shelf somewhere, it's likely to be so old it's oxidized beyond use. Using new oils rated SN, which is the newest rating, should be fine.

The weight and type are the labels to look for, not the API rating

I appreciate the info.  My main concern was for the automatic transmission but it sounds like all my worry (and running around) was unnecessary.  Interestingly enough, even our local Honda dealer didn’t have any suggestions.  Thanks again!

Either flavor of rotella works well. I use the 5-40 synth version and it works very well. A bit more expensive but handles high heats much better than conventional oil.

Nope, but if havoline works in it, so will this stuff!

I actually used havoline years ago.
