Engine and trans. overhaul

I've put obout 75 miles since buying a new (to me) 1975 cb 750.  It has about 67,000 miles on it and the bike is constantly showing me how old it is.  The transmission especially.  Is there any one on the west coast that overhauls these engines and transmissions?  Is it worth it to overhaul one or buy one already done?

That said, $2500-$3000 is too much for a bike that I paid $700 for.  It's up to you.  You'd basically end up with a new engine/transmission though.  I've only heard good things about the cycle x stuff, but it is pricey IMO.

Also, are you sure your current engine isn't having some simple problems you could fix yourself?

The engine seems to be running OK.  I haven't been on a bike in 35 years, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.  My last bike was a 350.  The transmission bangs and clanks going into gear and sometimes it will not go into gear during upshift.  It feels like it is in between gears or something.  I try to shift with a positive motion but it still sometimes when I release the clutch that I'm in neutral during a shift from 3rd to 4th or 2nd to 3rd.  For that much money though, maybe I'll just put up with it.

Sounds like a clutch problem. It might be ready, for a new one.

I defer to tools, but a cheap thing to try might be an oil change? have you tried running a good synthetic?

I thankfully haven't needed a new clutch, but I think I recall hearing that new dohc clutches are hard to come by. There is always fleabay though.

I would do two things before changing a tranny on these..

1.  run seafoam in the crankcase for 5 minutes at idle while shifting back and forth through the gears. This will get any carbon off the splines and shifter drum. Make sure to change the oil IMMEDIATELY after this procedure (including the filter)

2.  Change the shifter drum.  This is the piece that has the "pattern" in it that moves it all around.. Whit excesseve wear, this might explain your issue.  These gears are very tough, i doubt yours are hosed in some way.
