I just got new exhaust pipes, and for the life cant figure out or remember how these things go back in? Do the thicker ones go on 1 and 4 cylinders and the smaller ones go on 2 and 3? or do you mix then up with a big one and small one on each pipe?
Also neither of my bikes (cb750 anb cb500) had exhaust gaskets. All either had was the flanges and thats it?

Are those the half moon inserts that go in between the finned flanges and the exhaust and head? Or are those flanges with bolt holes in them for the sohc exhausts?
I think the sohc had two different types of exhaust mounts. Forget the years where they changed. I believe the dohc mounts are completely different.

All of my half moon ones were the same size. I just know that the skinny end goes into the head.

If thats a mac exhaust, use the skinny ones on all four. Put the non rolled end in first then put the flange on around them. Then tighten everything up. If you have any exhaust leaks, like I did after putting a new exhaust on, then try loosening the nuts on the exhaust studs until they are only finger tight, then run the bike for a bout 5-10 mins then slowly tighten everything back up and it should seal up any leaks. Hope that helps. If you tighten everything down and can still move the headers, then flip those flanges around, and tighten it all back down. I did that on mine, had em in backwards and had alot of play in the headers with the bolts all tightened down.
I know enough to get me in trouble.

I found the crush washer gaskets. Still perplexed how the flange gaskets go back in though.

I wouldnt know as I didnt replace or see any crush washers on my bike, 81 750k. I put a 4-1 mac exhaust on, and the only one that leaked was the number 4, I did the washer around the stud, run it then tighten it trick and that sealed it up.

I really doubt an auto parts store will have the crush washer/gasket. However most Honda shops still stock them. They are used on most every Honda bike made.

Yes and no. I finally figured out that the NON flanged in goes into the head and the flanged end goes against the pipes. I also found the old crush washers, so I ordered a new set and they should be here today. So I haven't got it all back together yet. I will post up when I get it done tonight

Well one problem done and back to another. THIS THING RUNS LIKE SHIT. The bike ran fine prior to new pipes. I put a new valve cover gasket on, put new sparkplug wires on (yes I labeled them and put them in the right spots) and the new exhaust and it sounds like there is something stuck in the pipes? I ended up pulling muffler off and looking both ends thinking I might of left some packing material in the pipe. Nope
I thought I might need new jets, but didnt think it would be this bad. It runs but very sluggish and coughing

Okay, so excuse the noobness of raising an older thread, but...
So what do I precisely need??? I ordered the MAC 4-1 exhaust, have the same set of flanges, and the exhaust. So you're telling me I need to track down these crush washers too? And what order does everything go?
I was hoping to put the exhaust on tonight, too...
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

Local Honda shop should have crush washers. I think I paid 13 for all four from ebay. Make sure when you pull old pipes off you take old crush washers out. Mine were pretty compacted in there. took a screw driver and hammer to tap lightly to pop them out. BE GENTLE WHEN DOING THAT. I then cleaned the area out and reinstall everything and vroom. Shouldn't take more than an hour.
I ended up not (so far not) needing to change jets on carb, but was thinking about rejetting just to see difference

I have a Dynojet Stage 1 kit coming so I will be rejetting. Going to remove the baffle from the exhaust - loud pipes save lives, right?
Awesome, now to find a good local Honda shop. I just looked up the schematic on BikeBandit (couldn't find anything in the FSM) for the exhaust and it shows how everything is supposed to work. And since someone told you to use the short flange set, that's what I'm going to use as well.
Thanks for the reply!
