Exhaust Stud Search

coffeegod
Hi! So I have swapped a motor from a '80 CB750F in to my '82 CB750 Custom. I got a little excited torquing the exhaust nuts and broke a stud :( It was literally the last thing I had to do before I could get insurance and finally ride this thing!

So it seems the studs on the '80 CB750F are much thinner than the ones on my '82 and are not swappable. All the studs that I see on ebay and wherever else all look like the thicker ones. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find the correct ones for the '80 F? I think I need the exhaust gaskets too. Removing the studs should be counter clockwise as well correct? I really don't want to screw these up again, I want to ride!

Thanks!

not sure if I am answering your question correctly, but if you have an old stud that fits in your bike, take it to ace hardware.  They have a huge selection of head bolts.  I am using them now on the 79 Cb750.  I dont know what the bolts are called but just bring one in and those good ole boys will fix ya up.

If you dont have any of your old stud bolts do same as above just buy a few different sizes

So in other words you recommend pulling out all the studs and simply replace them with a regular bolt?

If they are one size I see listed online they are 8mm x 55mm long, but they don't list the thread pitch. I would guess 1.25 (medium coarse) Bring your old one to any hardware or auto parts store....metric studs are fairly universal, you don't even need extra strong grade 8 bolts, grade 5 will do just fine.

If you've got one of the double sized ones...like this....

You're probably only going to find those at a motorcycle shop, or special ordering them.

Alright, maybe I've over thinking this a bit. I was hoping just to buy a set on ebay and be done with it but then it turned in to a big ordeal trying to find the correct ones. The ones in your picture are weird, the skinny side looks like the motor from my 80' F and the other side looks like the size that's on my 82's motor.

Maybe I'll try pulling out the busted one tomorrow... scared its going to crack off in the head.
