Exhaust collars

Took off the pipe wrapping to find a hot mess of rust underneath. Had the pipes sand blasted professionally, painted them with some high heat stuff and re wrapped them. Now the collars don't tighten enough to hold on the pipes. I mean not even close,  I didn't do anything with them except give them a wd-40 bath with a tooth brush and I was careful to keep everything together. Any thoughts tips or tricks on what I'm doing wrong.

Did you forget/lose the copper exhaust gaskets?

The two center clamps had some make shift shims but that was it. The pipes fit tight to the motor the clamps just don't seem to tighten enough to make a difference.  There were no other parts on there when I took them off and I dont recall mention of anything like that in the Haynes manual I was using.

Should have had some copper donuts/gaskets forming a seal with the block.  Look up your bike on www.bikebandit.com -- they have exploded schematics which will show the gaskets, as well as give you an idea of price (you can probably find them for less, elsewhere, but their diagrams are superb).

Bookmark Bike Bandit's site.  I find myself using it repeatedly, even with my Clymer, and the FSM.  It's quick, convenient, and it gives a ballpark price on many parts.  Occasionally, I do order parts from them, as well.  Cheers!

I've done some local searching and found a salvage yard that deals only in bikes so going to give them a try. But I'll check out bike bandit and my manuals before I go.  I've done some other research and I know these aren't stock so I'm thinking one of the previous owners engineered it to work without them. I'm also going to retap what I have, another mm won't hurt them and I'll be able to put some better bolts on as the ones now are pretty much crap.
