Float valve only sits 2/3rds of the way in? No gas going through.

glara11
Hello everyone hopefully this an easy fix. I have a 1980 750 and I had a gas leak on Carb # 4 and I decided

to remove the float bowl while the carbs are still on the bike to try and see if the float or the float valve are

functioning correctly. I take the float and float valve apart and inspect that everything is working correctly.

However now that I am putting everything back together the float valve isn't sitting flush on the seat. Any

ideas? I tried cleaning around a bit and I used a little bit of toothpaste to encourage a good sit for the float

valve. Now whenever i tun the petcock on Gas isn't coming through with or without the float valve installed.

Any ideas would be very very helpful.

Thank You.

A float valve has a cone shape on the end that stops the flow of gas.
When you say it will not sit flush, I do not know what you are talking about.

This post was updated on .

Thanks for the help! Im holding up the float valve with my finger, and thats as far up it goes.

I sort of fixed the gas not coming through. I was turning the petcock to a different position.

It looks like it is going in crooked to me. That's about the only thing that would not let it go in all the way.

How does that float valve compare in length to the others on the bike? Maybe it's the wrong one for the bike and too long of a needle.

Also, can you make sure there is not a piece of debris or some sort of build up (fuel varnish) that is preventig it from going all the way up?

If you hold that valve up with your finger does fuel leak by it?

Its the original float valve and it was seated correctly when I removed it. Fuel doesn't seen to even

want to come out from the float hole. However you are correct Shinyribs, when I turn the petcock on it only

seems to trickle a bit. I tried sticking in a small screwdriver only to feel something preventing to go up the

proper height.

Alright guys solved it. Had to rip out the carbs and flip them upside down. Guess what the cause for the float valve not sitting

correctly??? When I was cleaning I used a Q-Tip and some cotton was caught right inside the hole!!! Dam, now I got to put it all

back together....Thanks Shinyribs.
