Fork Oil

My manual for my 77 750 says you can use fork oil or transmission fluid for my forks..........is that ok?  Opinions?

      Yep ,Myself I use my tranny fluid in my ElCamino,And fork oil in well the forks.

Dexron III, or higher, as they are all reverse compatible, will work.  Dexron III is about 8 Weight, and it costs around $5/quart.

Fork Oil comes in 5-20 Weight, and costs around $15+/quart.  Both are uber-stable, regardless of temperature, and loads.  Both are effective.  The higher the Weight, the stiffer the fork response.  Typical Weights are 5-15.  The ATF, at 8 Weight, is middle of the road, not too hard, not too soft.

Fork fluids should be changed out every year, or two years, at the most.  Riding, compressing violently, wears it out, no matter what type you use.  Replacing it, makes a huge performance difference.  Also, make sure to check the fork tubes for signs of leakage:  oil film on the upper tubes, indicates leakage.  Adding Fork Gators, whether the bike was designed for them, or not, will double the life of the seals.  Cheers!
