Fork air cap replacement

michaelr
I am in the process of cleaning up the triple-tree and lowering the fork on my 750 dohc - getting rid of the air caps and replacing them with lower adjustment caps or bolts... basically to clear some space for the handlebar and maybe to slide the triple-tree down a nudge :)

I have a 35mm fork and the cap has a 31mm thread and is 20mm deep (see picture) - but all bolts i can find on ebay etc. seems to have a different thread.

Any idea where replacements can be found?

The caps off older SOHC fork tubes should go right on.

Believe me, i've bought and tried :) But no luck... the thread is not the same, and on the older tubes the thread is placed deeper. Se this picture compared to my picture:

Why not drill and tap threads in the other cap, install a Schrader valve, remove the balance line, and pressurise each fork individually?  Go to a store that sells ATVs and dirtbikes; they will have low pressure gauges that will fit the 11-14 psi range.

Ride safe, always!

Weld it shut, then machine it down.

Re: Fork air cap replacement

Welding it shut instead of replacing it is a good idea! I am replacing the springs with new progressive springs, so air pressure is not an issue.

Getting rid of the big, square air vent on the top leaves me with no socket to tighten the cap on to the tube though, but i guess welding a hex nut on top would do the trick and look pretty much like the standard sohc ones mentioned earlier in this thread.

Thanks for your input - i'll post some photos when they're done :)
