Fork ear replacement---how do I do it?

cardinal430
"................. how in the heck do you get those fork ears off to replace them????   would you go at it from the bottom somehow or take the handlebars off?  they have that goofy little notch in them that makes it look like quite a puzzle.  don't now how to remove those dust boot retainers to get a look at the thing.   Is that the "triple tree" or is that the one at the top , or both of them " triple trees" ?

The whole unit is the "Triple tree" The way to remove the fork ears is to remove the top section of the triple tree. And then slide the fork tubes out, so that the headlight ears slide off the bottom part of the triple tree. You do not need to remove the handle bars to remove the top section. Just loosen the pinch bolts (do not loose the washers that are placed in the gap where the fork is pinched). Then remove the speedometer and tach cables from the gauges, and the large chrome nut over the center of the stem. The top section can be worked off. Then loosen the bottom pinch bolts, and slide the forks out. You can then slide the fork ears off. The chrome ring is just pressed on. You should be able to wiggle it off.

When you do this, make sure you support the front end! It is an obvious thing but some forget to do it till they loosen the bolts and then their forks shoot up through the trees! not likely to damage anything, just scare the crap outa you.

On my 78, if I remember right, been a few years, I had to remove the front caliper and the speedo screw. Loosen the bolts holding the forks and slide them down till the fork ears went on. You sound lke you have gaitors on yours so you will need to disconnect those on 1 end.

All in all, it isn't hard really. The manual would show you what little you need to do. just don't force things and you will be fine.

okay thanks guys.  I am on the road again so I will look at this when I get home.  The manuals that I have don't seem to address this specific part ,  should I be looking out fork removal procedure?

Are you talking about the cap nuts that hold the springs down in the forks?

No, if you leave weight on the front end, the forks will shoot up through the trees as the front of the bike tries to fall. Either jack up under the engine and block it, or use straps to hang the front from a rafter. You just need to lift the front up to be able to slide the forks down, helps if the front wheel is removed but not required.

Not the cap bolts, the "pinch" bolts on the triple trees that pinch the trees onto the fork tubes.
