Front cam chain tensioner bolt broke

surfish95747
You guys are probably sick of hearing from me now, so just ignore this if you want, I'll understand . So In all my wisdom, I went to loosen the tensioner bolt and did not loosen the lock nut first. I'm kicking myself so hard because it just snapped the bolt leaving the rest of it in the hole. So, I went and found a bolt extractor set that I had, drilled the pilot hole and started tapping the extractor into the pilot hole. Well the tip of that broke off in the pilot hole. I was probably using too skinny of an extractor... I don't know.

Anyways, going from here, I took it down to my local Napa Auto Parts where my friend knows a mechanic who will look at it and see what he can do to get the bolt out. What have you guys done in the past? I know breaking off the tip of an extractor in it makes it harder, but any help is appreciated. I am thinking if it cannot come out, I'll get a new head, but is it possible to remove the cam chain without loosening the tensioner bolt? Thanks everybody.

NEVER IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE USE AN EASYOUT FOR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Except maybe cleaning your ears.

Did you try loosening/removing the locking nut? It should come right off, and you should be able to remove what is left (was left) of the bolt with pliers.

No the bolt snapped off below the lip of the hole. That's why i used a bolt extractor. No plier could get to it. I feel like such a moron, but it snapped because I didn't loosen the lock nut before, and the engine was slightly turned so I wasn't looking directly at it when I went to loosen and forgot about the locknut. Anyways, I royally screwed this up.

Is there a way to remove the cams without loosening tension from the bolt? I just don't see how I could with the tension on there. Damn.

I've used them with no issue. It just has to be a good set. and the right size bit.
Useful for when you don't want to drill the bolt out and re-tap threads.

Yes, I learned using the right size extractor works the best. I had used one much too skinny. I dig out the old bolt, and I picked up another cylinder head from a guy. So, all better.
