Ghost problem...

3/4"WRENCH
Ok i have a 82 honda cb750c. Its a bobber hardtail. I recently sent it to a well known and accredited repair shop. The mechanic rebuild all 4 carbs. Synced em. New rotor and stator. New rectifier. New battery. And it was running. Doesnt have stock exhaust anymore so he upped the jets to 115's. New spark plugs and cannot get the #1 cyinder to act right. At first round 3k it would start cutting out. He checked compression on all cylinders they all checked good. So we put a hotter spark plug in...got worse. So we put bigger jet in...no better. Seems like it runs a lil better after fully warmed up. But still bad even then and only on the.#1 cylinder. Plz help us figure this out.

And something i forgot to mention. It only cuts out after it gets to high rpm idles good and runs good up to bout 4-5 k since we upped the jet. Cant be the valves as we did the.compression check. Only thing i can figure is its starving for fuel still?

The OEM coils are weak.  Have you checked the spark plug wires, and the coils?  Pull the plug on the failing cylinder, ground the threads on the plug to the engine chassis, and hit the starter, to see if it is getting a good spark.  Cheers!

Or better yet, swap the #4 wire to the #1, and see if the problem moves to the #4 cylinder. If it moves, you know it is ignition. If it stays, you know it is carburation, or a mechanical issue with that cylinder.

Yes the mechanic did that and said its sparkins strong. But could the coil possibly be cutting oit at higher rpm.  And if so why would thw #3 do it also? The exhaust pipe on #1 while running i can hold it with my hand. The other three will blister u upon tapping them.

You did not say anything about the #3 cutting out, or that the #1 was cold while idling. This is important information! Again, switch the #1, and #4 plug wires and see if the problem moves. This will tell you if it is the ignition, or carb. However it is most likely your pilot circuits in the carbs are still plugged.

Ok i apologise. I am running it all through my head trying to think of everything. Ok the #3 isnt cutting out. Only the.#1. I did do the test u suggested just now. No change. When i put my hand at the very end of the exhaust pipe.the exhaust exiting on what ill call the driver side is cool. And very week amount coming out compared to the.passenger side. The passenger side is blowing out strong and hot. Im assuming its because the driver side is only burning on one cylinder. Another thing that jus happened was when i gun the throttle the #1 pipe gets hot enough to burn u but not like the.others as i have a big blister from grabbing them. It is a noticeable difference. I even swapped the wires to check them again no difference. I jus talked to the mexhanic and asked him to pressure test the #1 cylinder again...he checked it before all the work was.done and it was good then. But i figure maybe where it sat for so long before the fix maybe the compression ring is stuck? Its the only thing i faould figure.would cause all this. He even cleaned the carbs a third time yesterday.

OK, it is now narrowed down to a carurator issue. How is your mechanic cleaning the carbs? Is he using a chemical dip, or a sonic cleaner? How far is he disassembling them? Is he running a small wire through the jets, and the passages? You would be surprised how many people just think they are cleaning carbs. Just because they have been dipped/sprayed with carb cleaner, and look nice, and shiny, does not mean they are clean.

Well i havent ask him really but from what he told me he "soaks them" and he said he has a kit that has little bitty wires to clean the small holes. He does keep saying he thinks its a carb issue. I will tell him what u said snd see what he says.

Running pods isn't doing you any favors either, but in this case, it isn't the cause of your issue.

Just as a additional question, when you swapped the plug wires, did you also swap the plugs? He may have tested for spark but did he test every single plug? You may also want to check the gap on that plug.
It is possible the plug is weak or the gap is too large. Not likely but it is easy to check and so it may as well be done.

Yea we have put brand new plugs in every cylinder. And when i tested the wires i swapped off the good side. Gap is good and every plug is sparking strong.
