Good News And Bad News

Kube
Well, I took a friends advice today regarding my old 79 750f supersport.  I changed the fluids, put in a new battery, hooked up the IV botle I'm using as a gas tank for the time being and let her rip.  She turned over but wouldn't spark so I tried some starting fluid.  Fired right up... until the ether ran through and then she died.  The good news is it seems like she's ready to run if I can get the carbs figured out.  The bad news is I have to get the carbs figured out.  Also 1 and 4 are spewing gas out of the overflow valves.  Not sure about 2 and 3.  Any advice?  Do I need to totally rebuild?  I guess I probably should rejet while I'm at it since I moved from below sea level to south dakota.  Anyway, I guess I'm just venting but I would appreciate any advice any of you can give me.

Do you know if the carbs are stock? If so, do not worry about rejetting at this time. You will want to get a manual for your bike first. You will curl the pages before you are done!

The carbs most likely need to be cleaned. I would bet that some floats are stuck and the jets gummed up.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Hi kube60, it looks like you will have to clean the carbs. How long was the bike sitting?.
I would take them off, take them apart without separating them, watch were all the parts go, clean and blow everything out real good. Put the idle air screws back in carefully to the bottom and back them out a turn and a half which is a base setting. If you have adjustable float levels set them to specks. Make sure the floats are not heavy and that should get you started.
You should have a shop manual. I have the Clymer and don't think much of it. There has to be a better manual available.

Good luck,
Karl

The carbs are stock.  I have the clymers manual and it said to rejet if the altitude changes so thats why i thought i would have to.  If I don't thats great although I am seriously considering going to a 4 into 1 exhaust setup so I may have to anyway but I just want to get it on the road for now.  The last time it was registered was about 11 years ago so its been sitting for at least that long.  Dad was a cop and got called to a nasty accident and lost his nerve.

Should  invest in a carb rebuild kit or just clean it out as is.  Do you have a recommendation as to which kit I should buy?  I was looking at this one http://www.randakks.com/DOHC%20Four%20Page.htm#1 but it is a bit pricy so if i can avoid buying the kit I'd like to

I just cleaned my carbs(the bike was sitting for quite some time) I did not buy a kit. The parts, like gaskets etc, were all re-usable.

Thanks for the help.  The next couple days will be a perfect time to get that done.  we're supposed to be getting a blizzard so as long as I can yank them before the snow starts I should have them ready to put back on as soon as it thaws.

Whe working on the carbs, do one at a time so you don't mix up the parts. They have been together a long time and will work better when put back where they are now.

Also, be prepared to clean them out again. And again. And again before it runs as it should.

Good luck.

Got em all cleaned up today.  they were bad off.  a couple of the air pumps didn't even want to move. every one of the jets was clogged and there was a thick layer of hardened black ooze over everything.  I hope the rubber plugs over the slow air jet aren't important as they were all rotten.  I left them in but they're in bad shape. I just hope I put the right jets in the right places.  The ones with the bigger holes go over the needle connected to the air pump right?
