Hard Start on Warm Engine

This post was updated on .
Should I be riding and need to stop for gas and turn the beast off . . . should I do something stupid like stall the beast once I'm riding . . . I have a hard time re-starting.

It hardly turns over and if it doesn't catch immediately [it usually doesn't] then there is NO cranking power at all. Waiting 5 - 10 minutes usually gives enough time to re-boot and off I go, but I'm worried that this might not last.

NOTE: it's done this since I've had the thing; and I wind up replacing the battery every year or two [I think it's been a year since the last one; no riding the beginning of last October - beginning of this May].

[edit: should have said that it's an '80 CBK]

Could be the brushes going out. Do, you need a starter?

[because I'm mechanically challenged . . . ] a starter???

would that kill the battery so it only turns over [slowly] a couple of times until there is nothing happening at all? wow!

so . . . how do I find out for sure if that's the case?

and TOOLS -- it's official -- I fly into KCI October 27 and out the 29. busy weekend: looks like I'll drive to Toronto Airport [~4 1/2 hours] Thursday to fly to KC, then back to Toronto Saturday to drive to a conference [that actually starts Friday night] the other side of TO, then drive back home [~8 hours] Sunday afternoon. much easier when I fly direct to KC and back!].

I replaced the starter on my Shadow.  Symptoms were VERY slow cranking all the time, worse when hot, drained battery quickly.  I took it apart, and saw where the brushes were almost non-existent, and wires were burnt to a crisp.  I found a used one at a local MC junkyard (so I could continue to get the bike running), and got a kit to replace the brushes on the broken one.  It's a very easy procedure to rebuild it.  Just make sure you follow the manual step by step.
